How to Be Safe While Moving
As you’re preparing for your move into your new house, apartment, dorm room, etc., you may be so excited to relocate that you may forget how to do it safely. We got you covered! Check out our safety tips for moving below.
Where the Right Clothing
You need to dress for a long-haul, so wearing something comfortable is important as you’re moving boxes and furniture around. Avoid clothing that is loose and baggy that may get caught on boxes, furniture, or moving truck. Also, wear closed-toe shoes for your feet like sneakers instead of sandals or flip-flops. Not doing can reduce your balance and mobility as you move.
Don’t Stuff Your Boxes
Lighter boxes can help you move safely. Sometimes, we tend to overpack our boxes. However, this idea doesn’t benefit your physical health. Moving boxes are designed to carry a certain amount of weight and going over that weight may lead to injury to your back, knees, and other joints. Keep in mind not to pack more than 50 lbs for small boxes, 65 lbs for medium boxes, and 70 lbs for large boxes.
Have a Dolly on Hand
Using a dolly to move your boxes or furniture can make moving so much easier. You reduce the risk of injuring yourself as you haul your belongs in and out of the moving truck. If you don’t have a dolly handy, you can get one from most local moving companies or hardware stores. A dolly makes it easy to move safely.
Take “Stretch” Breaks
When moving throughout the day, always take stretching breaks. Tight muscles and limbs can lead to injury, so make sure to keep your body loose at the start and the end of your move. If you’re not sure how to stretch your muscles, check out these stretch moves here.
Clear A Pathway
As you’re lugging furniture and boxes out, have a pathway cleared to avoid tripping over anything. There are already potential risks of injury as you’re moving. Designating a clear pathway helps eliminate the risk of serious injury from trips and falls as you’re carrying heavy items.
Drink Water and Eat for Your Move
Another moving safety tip is to stay properly nourished, so you don’t run out of fuel while moving. Moving is already a strenuous job to do and not staying properly nourished and hydrated can lead to exhaustion, weakness, dizziness, etc. Drink water frequently, even when you’re not thirsty. Dehydration can lead to a decline to brain function and strain your cardiovascular health, so drink up!
